An infusion of radical well-being in Mexico
Celebrating a milestone?
Hungry for joy and play?
Facing major transition?
Weary from caregiving?
Eager to reconnect to your voice and body in new ways?
Ready to move, sing, breathe, laugh, weep, and tell stories in the company of other fine humans?
Join Barbara and Margie for a nourishing week of singing, yoga, chant, poetry, play, ceremony, and community at Mar de Jade. You don’t need ANY experience with yoga or singing to reap the full benefit of this week. Our emphasis is on pleasure and presence more than perfection. We designed the week to give you lots of time off to do whatever you please: loll in the hammocks, float in the pool, play in the waves, walk the beach, and indulge in spacious conversations with fellow participants. We have been leading this retreat at Mar de Jade since 2009 and consistently hear from participants what a life-changing, joyful and deep experience it is.
We offer two classes per day. At 10:30 we use our voices for an hour, followed by an hour of yoga. We sing the sun down every evening, enjoy our dinner and then convene for another session of song, followed by restorative yoga. The week also includes partner yoga, chant, poetry, vocal yoga (based on Barbara’s book, Full Voice), playful improvisation and nourishing ritual .

As an unconventional teaching artist, I am leaning into my new life chapter in the Pacific Northwest on the Olympic peninsula, scouting out ways to serve this place in these insane times with sane practices through crafts and classes offered under SHELTER IN THE STORM.
In October 2017, I sold my century-old house and left 31 years in the urban hum of Minneapolis for the sweet Sequim WA valley between the mountains and the Salish Sea, responding to a call to live at a slower, simpler, saner pace, and to expand my offerings beyond the confines of traditional yoga studios and educational institutions.
There is a lifetime love of learning in my work. I bring an extensive background in theatre arts–holding a BFA & MFA in Acting, plus two decades of professional acting and university teaching experience; 15 years as a full-time instructor of yoga, breathwork and chanting–in various settings with diverse populations, including being a founding teacher and former manager of Minneapolis-based One Yoga, A NonProfit Organization; ongoing study in the skills of deep living, making human culture, knowing history, being claimed by ancestry, and working for a better day for those coming up behind, and those who’ve gone before–as a continuing scholar since 2011 in Stephen Jenkinson’s Orphan Wisdom School; and I most recently helped launch the 612 Sauna Society Cooperative, also in Minneapolis, as a steering committee and founding board member.
Whether honing the human skills of grief and gratitude for the gift of life through voice, breath, movement, handwork, and our relationships with the world, these times call for sane practices, so that we might proceed knowing that our vibrant whole health is entwined with the health of the whole world–seen and unseen. Every choice has consequence. Everything matters.

All of my work takes root in voice. As a voice coach I invite people to find their voices, whatever that means to them. My book, Full Voice: The Art and Practice of Vocal Presence, presents what I’ve learned from decades of “midwifing voices.”
My singing keynotes explore themes of leadership, meaning, voice and community for people in a wide variety of professions: training, health care, law, education, nonprofits and industry. My twelve years as an organizational development consultant helps keep things real and relevant.
I’m also a singer/songwriter currently at work on my eighth CD of mostly original music. The lyric-rich songs tap into jazz, gospel and folk roots. My greatest joy is when people make use of the songs in their everyday lives and work.
Ten years ago, I founded the Morning Star Singers, a volunteer choir that sings for people facing illness, end of life, depression or grief.
And how I love inviting people to sing together! I carry thousands of nourishing community songs and am constantly inspired by how quickly a group of untrained strangers can create beauty and resonance together.
